WEEKLY DEVOTIONALS – 2011
The Bible – Absolute Truth – Week 23 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.
Luke 1: 1-4
The Authority of The New Testament: Luke, a close associate of Peter, wrote an accurate and truthful account of Jesus. Each New Testament Book was written by an Apostle, or someone probably close to an Apostle (Luke and Mark) who had authority to do so. From Paul’s writings in 2 Thessalonians 2:2 and Jude 3, we see false epistles and prophets pouring doubt into the Believers. Thus it was essential that a compilation of inspired Scripture be identified by the church fathers. The Council of Hippo (A.D. 393 and Carthage - A.D. 397) accepted the 27 books that we know to be the New Testament. This closed forever any new writings or additions. Observable facts:
- Genesis begins Scripture by revealing Eternity Past and opening our time and space (Genesis 1 and 2).
- Revelation transitions our time to Eternity Future (Revelation 20-22). Only God could make such a Complete Scripture.
- Scripture comes with some warnings as well! Revelation 22:18-19 says to not add or delete Scripture - to God’s severe displeasure and judgment.
- Luther, in 1521, stood in life or death on the Canon of Scripture alone!
THOUGHTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK
- What other books do you study rather than Divine Scripture?
- How have religions violated the command of Scripture today?
- What will you do today to maintain the purity of Scripture alone?
